Highlights 2024–2025

Mahler–Scartazzini at the Centre of the Season

At its centre stood the completion of the Mahler–Scartazzini Cycle with the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, marking the culmination of a seven-year artistic journey under Simon Gaudenz.

In addition to the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, numerous engagements have led to wonderful artistic encounters, including the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, and many more.

Mahler–Scartazzini: A Completed Cycle

Concept and scope

Initiated in 2018, the Mahler–Scartazzini Cycle brought all symphonies by Gustav Mahler into dialogue with newly commissioned works by Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini. Each Mahler symphony was paired with a contemporary composition, creating a continuous artistic arc that unfolded across seven seasons.

Realisation and documentation

The cycle culminated in the 2024–2025 season with the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra under Simon Gaudenz. The project was realised with the sustained support of the City of Jena, JenaKultur and selected foundations, and has been fully documented through recordings released by Odradek Records, including the final volume featuring Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 (“Symphony of a Thousand”).

With its completion, the Mahler–Scartazzini Cycle stands as a coherent artistic body of work and a lasting contribution to the symphonic repertoire.

Release of the Mahler-Scartazzini Cycle Vol. 4

"Under the spell of the sublime – Simon Gaudenz impresses with the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra. A successful complete recording between world conflagration and world transfiguration."

Schumann on tour

“The Jena Philharmonic Orchestra is at home with Schumann and his significant first symphony, which he wrote in just four days at the age of 30. The many musicians of the large orchestra played the four movements as if from a single mould, thus performing on their own turf. The spring-like and optimistic nature attributed to this symphony, which stems from the short phase of the composer's life when he was outwardly happy and content, came across well, not least thanks to the clear and spirited conducting of the orchestra's general music director, Simon Gaudenz."
